ＣＥＯの時間の使い方については、これまでヘンリー・ミンツバーグの『マネジャーの仕事』など、数例が存在する程度だった。そこで筆者らは、２００６年より大企業のＣＥＯが２４時間をどのように使っているかを３カ月間追跡する調査を開始、２７人延べ６万時間分のデータを収集した。そのほか数百人のＣＥＯとの議論も踏まえ、本書では、ＣＥＯの時間の使い方についての分析結果を紹介し、稀少な経営資源である時間を有効に使うための処方箋を示す。それとともに、このデータが物語るＣＥＯの役割についても論じる。
